One Day on Lake Como: What to Expect

How a day from Milan actually unfolds — the drive up, the cruise, the towns and the rhythm of the crowds.

Up to the lake

The day begins in Milan and runs about an hour north to the town of Como at the lake's south-western tip — by coach on a guided tour, or by a cheap direct train if you're doing it yourself. It's a short, easy transfer, and the moment the lake opens out below the pre-alpine hills is the day's first reward. From Como the day turns to the water, which is where Lake Como is best understood.

The cruise is the heart of it

Time on the water is what ties the day together: a cruise up the villa-lined shore, passing the great houses and gardens with the mountains rising straight from the lake behind them. It's the part that turns a list of towns into a single, coherent lake, and the part hardest to get any other way — Como's drama is in its steep shores and its villas seen from below, from a boat, rather than from the lanes.

Time in the towns

The day's stops are largely free time: a couple of hours in Bellagio to climb the salite and walk the shore, and often a second town — Como at the start, or Varenna across the water in season. Expect an hour and a half to two hours per town, enough for a lakeside lunch and an unhurried wander. This is when to get above the waterfront to the quieter upper streets and the gardens.

The rhythm of the crowds

The one thing to plan around is timing. Bellagio and Varenna fill up around midday, especially in summer, so the mornings and late afternoons are calmer and lovelier. A guided day handles the schedule for you; going independently, aim to reach the busy towns early or late, and use the middle of the day for the cruise or a garden. Get the timing right and a single day on Lake Como is one of the loveliest you can have from Milan.
